An insight into the mechanics of bonuses by online casinos.

An insight into the mechanics of bonuses by online casinos.

If you are reading these lines, it is for one reason that the universe of online casinos and their bonuses is new to you. We can reassure you right away that you have come to the right place.

We will try to “familiarize” with this environment and put aside the “technical” vocabulary specific to bonuses to decipher this universe, which is both fascinating but also terribly codified. Are you ready for this little walk with us? Here we go.

Why do casinos offer bonuses?

It is interesting to know the motivations of online casinos even if they are fairly obvious: casinos offer bonuses to attract new players initially. Once the player is “recruited,” online casinos will continue to offer them bonuses to “retain.”

Does that make sense to you? All right, let's move on.

What are the different types of bonuses?

Not all players have the same “profile”: some prefer table games more, others bet very big, others prefer to play for free, etc. Every player belongs to a different segment and style of gambling, which means they have different expectations from the platform.

To meet these different expectations, online casinos have, therefore, “developed” different types of bonuses to attract these different types of players. This is where it starts to get tough. There are thus 4 main categories:

No deposit bonus: this is a bonus which, as the name suggests, does not require you to deposit money. The casino “gives” you free money. These bonuses are generally between € 5 and € 50.

Deposit bonus: this type of bonus is associated with a “deposit” on the part of the player. So the casino will give you money based on what you have deposited. This is why these bonuses are expressed with a “percentage”; it is the percent of your deposit that the casino “offers.”

Cashback bonus: this is a bonus that reimburses you for part of your losses (if you lose). This bonus is indicated as a percentage.

Bonus Free Spins: “free spins” are free spins on slot machines.

The “terms and conditions” of bonuses

You must have heard the quote, “There is no such thing as free lunch.”

Unfortunately for you, and luckily for casinos, bonuses have “terms and conditions.” Online casinos don't just “give” you money (it would be called charity, and it's not how casinos do business).

In these terms and conditions, there is one crucial term to understand: “playthrough.” “Playthrough” is one of the technical terms specific to online casinos that can be pretty hard to understand, but we will try the best to break it down for you.

The playthrough, expressed as a number, is the number of times you have to play your bonus amount and deposit before you can withdraw your winnings.

Example: If we are talking about a bonus that has a playthrough of 50, this means that you will have to “bet” 50 times the value of your deposit and the bonus before you can withdraw your money. In case you have obtained a bonus of 100 € by depositing 100 €, you will have to bet 50 x (100 + 100) or 10 000 €. The number may seem high to you, but in general, it goes faster than you think.

You can find out where you are with the required bets before “unlocking” the bonus by asking directly to customer support.

Is that clearer? The “playthrough” is ultimately only a way for the casino to prevent you from “leaving” immediately with the bonus! It is one of the criteria that makes a bonus interesting or not. So, when we compare the bonuses and give them a rating, the playthrough comes into account. Hence the interest of trusting us in the rankings, we know what we are talking about!

In the bonus terms and conditions, there are other terms that we specify in our bonus review, such as:

Is the bonus “withdrawable”?

What is the minimum deposit amount?

To elaborate further upon bonuses, there are deposit bonuses that are “without playthrough.” These bonuses have the advantage of giving you greater “freedom,” but they have the disadvantage of being of a limited amount compared to the other bonuses.

One thing to keep in mind is that not all bonuses are “good” for all casino games.

This is a very important principle to remember. Not all bonuses are compatible with all casino games.

Assuming that casinos do not have the same “margin” depending on the casino game, they cannot offer the same “playthrough” to all casino games. So depending on the game you play, the value of the playthrough will vary. Generally, the casino advantage being lower at table games (blackjack, roulette, craps, etc.), the playthrough in these games will be higher than in slot machines.

Please also note that, in some cases, some games are not compatible to “unlock” the bonus and therefore do not count when you bet. So, if a bonus mentions that it is intended for slot machines and that you bet € 1000 in blackjack, it will not count! You will have to wager the amount in the game mentioned (in our example at the slot machines).

Now that you have a fair idea of what the bonuses are and with what motives they are provided, we hope that you use the information to your advantage and realize your hopes of achieving big one day!
